About iUrban Teen

iUrban Teen is a nationally recognized program that brings career-focused STEM+Arts education to historically and systemically excluded teens ages 12 to 18. Youth receive hands-on exposure to various careers and civic engagement opportunities that transcend their current boundaries. Our program goals are to increase awareness and knowledge of STEM+Arts careers, build confidence and critical thinking, provide mentorship and internship opportunities, and create a collaborative learning model for youth.

General Job Description

The iSports Instructor will lead a three-month module teaching teenagers the fundamentals of Microsoft Excel and basic statistics within the context of sports analytics. This instructor will create an engaging learning environment that fosters technical skills and an appreciation for data-driven decision-making in the sports world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implementation & Delivery:
    • Deliver a comprehensive curriculum covering core Excel functions (formulas, charts, data analysis tools) and relevant statistical concepts (mean, median, mode, standard deviation, probability).
    • Tailor lessons to be engaging and relevant to teenagers, incorporating sports examples and real-world datasets.
    • Facilitate interactive activities, discussions, and projects, encouraging active participation and critical thinking.
  • Classroom Management:
    • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages collaboration and respect.
    • Effectively manage student behavior, address questions, and provide individual support as needed.
    • Maintain accurate attendance records and communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Technology & Resources:
    • Utilize Microsoft Excel and other appropriate software/tools for teaching.
    • Identify and incorporate relevant sports datasets, case studies, and online resources.
    • Stay up to date on advancements in sports analytics and adjust curriculum accordingly.
  • Program Evaluation & Development:
    • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and improvement of the iSports program.
    • Gather student feedback and make adjustments to enhance the learning experience.
    • Collaborate with other instructors and program staff to ensure program success.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., statistics, mathematics, sports management, education) preferred.
    • Experience teaching or working with teenagers in an educational setting.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and basic statistical concepts.
    • Passion for sports and an understanding of sports analytics.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with teenagers from diverse backgrounds.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks.
    • Creativity and enthusiasm for developing engaging and interactive lesson plans.
    • Adaptability and a willingness to learn and grow in a dynamic environment.
    • Able to pivot mid-assignment per the needs of students and to catch up with students who may be behind in pacing while still serving students who are on pace in the program

Additional Information:

  • Hours: Part-time, with classes scheduled during the three-month module on specific days/times.
  • Location: iUrban Teen Vancouver Office and Client Partner location (Portland)
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience.
  • Background check: Required.
